How to cut shoe molding corners.

With your favorite utility knife and new box corner cutter, you will remove the old shoe molding corners on the ceiling and replace them with new ones.

Step 1: First unscrew any existing light fixtures just in case they are connected to wiring.

Step 2: Determine the length you need for the piece of molding by measuring up from the floor 11/2" (38mm) then mark a line at that height with a pencil then connect it to your first line of pencil marks on each wall.

Step 3: Cut off any excess strip at either end that sticks out past your drawn lines with a sharp utility knife.

Step 4: Next cut small v-shapes into the corners for ease of installation, cut one corner at a time and then measure 2" (51mm) from this point and make another small snip. Repeat this process on all four corners.

Step 5: Fit the molding corner over the ceiling or wall and position it to look how you want it; then mark any excess that sticks out over the edge with a pencil, then cut it off with your sharp utility knife.

Step 6: Double check your work before applying any glue or nails to make sure it's still positioned correctly and looks perfect before you apply anything permanent, if need be redo it until you're happy with it.

Step 7: After you’re happy with it, use the sharp utility knife to trim any excess off the piece of molding.

Step 8: If you used a pencil to mark your lines, you’ll need to touch up the pencil marks with a fine point sharpie or a pen after you’re done so the soft or used tip doesn’t get damaged by glue.

This is an easy way to replace all of your shoe molding in one go, but if required it should be fairly easy to do this yourself at home as long as you have the right tools. However, if you want it finished professionally we can help here at The Shoe Doctor. We can also do other jobs both inside and outside at affordable prices.

Step 9: Use the correct amount of glue that matches your shoe molding, apply it to the areas on the back of each piece of shoe molding that will be touching other pieces. Wait five minutes for the glue to begin to get tacky, then begin pressing it together and holding it for five minutes at a time. This can be done as many times as needed until you're happy with how strong it is holding together; once dry you can paint over them and start using them right away. When painting over these pieces make sure you use a latex primer so that they don’t end up cracking or breaking in time.

Step 10: Putty work can be used to cover up any nail or screw marks that may be left over; you should also use putty on a joint before painting because the paint will never look as good as it did when it was new and applied; this is why the putty is so important.
